Vine, Instagram and the rise of bite-sized video - CNN

Vine, Twitter's app that lets you shoot and share 6-second videos, is available for Android phones and iPhones.

(CNN) -- Thanks to technology, most of us now have the ability to shoot and edit long, high-quality videos on our phones, to upload them and to share them socially with everyone we know.

But somehow, the hot social media trend is supershort video clips that are much closer to the GIF than to "Citizen Kane."

In the past few years, a number of companies have launched around mobile video-sharing -- among them Viddy, Socialcam and Twitter's own looping, six-second Vine -- all vying for the unofficial title, "the Instagram of video." These apps have bred a unique category of content, from real-life moments such as blowing out birthday candles to short-form artistic creations that play with the medium.

Now rumors are swirling that the next contender in this growing field will be Instagram itself. The popular photo-sharing app is expected to unveil a video-sharing feature Thursday during a press event at Facebook, its parent company, according to reports on TechCrunch, AllThingsD and other tech blogs.

Not to be outdone, Vine seems to be readying some new features itself. The app's co-founders posted several Vines Wednesday that suggest users will soon have the ability to save drafts, splice bits of multiple Vines together and browse content based on categories and genres.

So, a social-video turf war may be looming: Instagram vs. Vine. Facebook vs. Twitter.

There's no word yet on what time limits or filters Instagram might place on a video-sharing tool. But on other platforms, the short clips have proven to be hugely creative, offering up bizarre snippets of art and fleeting peeks into people's lives. Vine correctly predicted that its shorter form would result in artsy videos along with the usual clips of celebrities and cute animals.

"The appeal (of) short video apps are well ... they're short!" said Vine user Khoa Phan in an e-mail to CNN. "You don't have to sit there for a long time to watch it. And due to the length, you can watch many videos in (a) short time span."

"Vine is immediate and to-the-point. The audience can view content quickly and consume multiple videos/stories in a short period of time," agreed Vine user Matt Willis, who believes the six-second limit "forces the user to capture the defining elements of a story or concept."

Among the most successful clips on Vine are stop-motion videos, animations and how-tos. There are unexpected uses of the form, such as this Magic 6 Ball that cycles through a loop of answers. Many people turn the camera on themselves, giving new dimension to the overplayed "selfie" and fleshing out their Twitter persona with a real voice.

As it turns out, a Vine is even the perfect length for covering a rodeo. Wyoming's Casper-Star Tribune uses the app heavily to round up the best performances at local rodeo events. What's impressive is how much can be packed into these short moments.

Viddy and Vine enforce the shorter-is-better philosophy. Vine has had success with six seconds, a length Twitter settled on after testing videos between four and 10 seconds long.

"Posts on Vine are about abbreviation -- the shortened form of something larger," said Vine co-founder Dom Hofmann in the blog post announcing the app. "They're little windows into the people, settings, ideas and objects that make up your life."

Viddy has gone the opposite direction, expanding its initial 15-second time limit to 30 seconds in response to interest from its users. Most clips show mundane life events, scenes, or pieces of conversation, said Jason Rapp, chairman of Viddy.

"Life keeps on going past six (seconds)," he said in an interview with CNN.

Vine has passed 13 million users. Earlier this month, Twitter released an Android version of its Vine app and it quickly became more popular than Instagram as a way to share media on Twitter, according to analytics site Topsy.

As YouTube discovered long ago, there seems to be an insatiable hunger for online video. In May alone, Americans watched 41 billion videos online. The format also can be very lucrative, especially when the content is created for free by third parties.

So how will all these services make money off small videos?

Twitter could offer promoted Vines, like it does with tweets. But where people have finished reading a promoted tweet by the time they realize it's paid, clicking on a Vine and watching it requires an extra step that might lose people. Alternatively, Twitter could include ads in the videos themselves.

YouTube has had success with ads inserted at the beginning, or middle, of a user-uploaded video. But the new crop of social video is so short that any ads would have to get their message across in just a few seconds.

"We're taking a more cautious approach because a traditional 15-30 second pre-roll is not going to work on a 30-second video," said Viddy's Rapp.

It makes sense that Facebook would want to get in on the micro-video trend, and choosing Instagram as the tool for shooting and sharing these videos is natural. More than 100 million people use Instagram each month, uploading a staggering 40 million photos a day. Facebook, looking for ways to boost its mobile revenue, may eventually want to add short ads to Instagram videos.

Meanwhile, fans of the short-video format will keep pushing the boundaries of what is possible. And the apps' social aspects connect them to other like-minded people.

"Think of how Twitter has evolved. We have learned to fit often-complex statements into ... (140) characters," said Willis, the Vine user. "Sometimes we chop bits out, or make up new words -- the rules are loose, and great Twitter users have a knack for exploiting this. Vine is heading in a similar way. The message needs to be immediate and without embellishment."

"It's not just a video tool. It's a social community," said Vine user Hunter Harrison. "The interaction is unbelievable. I've come to know people up there from all over the world ... people that I would now consider friends. It's actually pretty crazy how it has connected people."

Band of Heavy Weather Ravages Midwest - New York Times

KANSAS CITY, Mo. '� An enormous string of thunderstorms whipped through the Upper Midwest on Wednesday and barreled toward the Atlantic Coast overnight and into Thursday, blanketing a vast swath of the country with high winds, large hail and rain. More than a dozen tornadoes were reported throughout the Midwest on Wednesday, from Iowa to Indiana.

The storms were expected to reach the Washington area on Thursday, and also could hit Philadelphia, forecasters said.

Bob Oravec, a lead forecaster with the National Weather Service, said the system appeared to be developing into a weather phenomenon known as a derecho, a fast-moving storm that brings high winds to a large region '� much broader than typical thunderstorms. 'It's starting to reach its strongest strength this evening and will continue to be strong into the overnight hours,' Mr. Oravec said late Wednesday.

A derecho on June 29 last year led to 1,195 reports of wind damage throughout the Midwest and the mid-Atlantic. Two tornadoes were reported then.

Wednesday's storm left tens of thousands of people without power in Northern Illinois, according to the Weather Channel, which also reported that 500 flights out of Chicago's O'Hare International Airport had been canceled.

The National Weather Service received reports of downed trees and power lines throughout the Midwest, and winds that peaked at 70 miles per hour.

The Chicago White Sox postponed their Wednesday night game at home against the Toronto Blue Jays, and a symphony concert in Millennium Park in downtown Chicago was canceled.

A tornado near Belmond, Iowa, damaged a restaurant, according to local media reports. Shabbona Lake State Park in Illinois, about 70 miles west of Chicago, reported that boats had been tossed onto one another.

Hail the size of tennis balls was reported in Marion County, Ohio.

From iOS 7 to Mac: What to Expect at Apple's WWDC 2013 - PC Magazine

Apple is one of the most secretive companies in the world, yet it produces a notable number of consumer tech devices that people use every day. For better or worse, products like the Macintosh, iPhone, iPad, and iTunes are iconic products that people have integrated into the concept of their identity. Because of this, there is a brisk business in speculation about what the Cupertino-based company will be bringing out next at this year's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). Here's our take on what we're expecting.

iOS 7iOS, the underpinning environment of the Apple iPod touch, iPhone, iPad, and yes, even the Apple TV is what millions of Apple users interact with multiple times in a day. It's a given that there will be a new iOS, since updates are an almost yearly event. About the only thing we can truly speculate about is when will the update drop? OS X 10.9 (maybe)OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion was unveiled at last year's WWDC, and made its debut in July. In his review, PCMag's Edward Mendleson proclaimed it "the world's best consumer operating system money can buy" and gave it a rare 4.5 out of 5 rating. OS X is the traditional Mac operating system that has powered MacBook Pros, Mac Pros, and iMacs for the past decade and change. Mountain Lion is considered a refinement and feature boost for OS X 10.7 Lion, so it's a relatively mature operating system. OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard was the last OS X that lasted longer than a year, and we think 10.8 could follow that lead. That isn't to say that Apple won't tease developers with OS X 10.9. This year's WWDC would be a good time to introduce the OS to its faithful developers and get them started on updating their apps for OS X 10.9 in 2014.

iPhone/iPod touchApple just introduced a new value-oriented 16GB �iPod touch, dropping a few features like the rear-facing camera and eliminating color choices to reach a lower $229 price point.The changes bring it up to iPhone 4S levels internally (mainly processor), and iPhone 5 levels externally (the screen size and resolution). This sets the stage for an updated iPod touch, which will almost certainly be an upgrade over the current mainstream model. A 128-160GB iPod touch is certainly not out of the question, and such a capacious iPod touch could finally be the death knell of the 160GB hard drive-powered iPod classic. A larger storage space for lossless music files is the reason that the iPod classic is still around, and having a high-capacity iPod touch could satisfy that small but vociferous audience. Still, Apple traditionally reserves its iPod upgrades for the fall, so we might have to wait a few months.

We'll also likely be waiting a bit longer for a new iPhone. WWDC will provide a look at the new smartphone's OS, but don't expect to try it out on the rumored "iPhone 5S" until the fall. If past performance is any indication, though, that new iPhone 5S will come in the same chassis as the iPhone 5, but with an upgraded processor and possibly even a new 128GB capacity model. This will give the case manufacturers another year to produce their lucrative wares, and will keep two-year upgraders happy.�

iPadApple achieved some level of infamy from longtime fans by updating the Retina display-equipped iPad after only seven months. While we don't think that Apple will update the current fourth-generation iPad so quickly, the possibility is still there. But aside from iPad-related updates to iOS 7, we don't think any new iPads are on the agenda at WWDC 2013.

MacBook AirMacBook Air is a prime candidate for updates. While the chassis for the 11-inch and 13-inch MacBook Air hasn't changed too much over the past two generations, the internals have evolved along with Intel's Core processors. Intel has announced its 20Gbps Thunderbolt 2, so that's always a possibility. Thunderbolt 2 has support for 4K video, so the MacBook Air could drive these high end displays with Thunderbolt 2 connected to a 4th-Gen Intel Core processor. Rumor sites have bounced the idea of Retina display on MacBook Air. While this would be intriguing on an 11-inch or 13-inch MacBook Air, it would be prohibitively expensive at this time. MacBook Air starts at $999, while higher-than-HD displays are going for over $1,500. We could see a 1080p HD display upgrade for the MacBook Air instead of a Retina display, and still keep the $999-$1,199 base prices intact.

MacBook ProLast year was the year of the Retina display. Apple released MacBook Pros in 13- and 15-inch versions with Retina displays. These two systems are certainly eligible for a 4th-generation (Haswell) Intel Core upgrade, just like on the MacBook Air models. Nvidia's new GeForce GTX 750M-780M graphics would be a good upgrade for the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display. Thunderbolt 2 is a strong possibility for at least the 15-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display. It might be time for Apple to retire its older 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Pro models. Even though the 13-inch MacBook Pro is one of its top sellers, the 13-inch MacBook Air is just close enough in price and capabilities to replace it in Apple's lineup. The non-Retina MacBook Pros with the older chassis are the last portable Macs with optical drives, and Apple has demonstrated in the past that it has no qualms about dropping older technologies from its products. If it does decide to keep the older chassis around, look for options that replace the optical drive with an extra SSD/Flash Storage for Fusion Drive.

iMac and Mac miniiMac was redesigned at last year's event in San Jose. Apple will most likely upgrade these desktops' processors to 4th-generation Intel Core and possibly upgrade the Nvidia graphics in all iMacs, but further upgrades are unlikely. Unless touch screens are a major component of OS X 10.9, touch screens are unlikely for the new iMacs. Mac mini could stick around with a 4th-gen Intel Core upgrade to its processor. Fusion drive is likely to continue as is.

Mac ProAn upgraded Mac Pro workstation has been anticipated for over two years now. In addition to upgraded Xeon processors and graphics, the Mac Pro would be a great candidate for Intel's new Thunderbolt 2 connector. USB 3.0 is also a must have at this point. Mac-based professionals still want tower desktops, because they are so upgradable. �While it's an interesting theory, a smaller minitower or Mac mini-sized Mac Pro is kind of unlikely and somewhat pointless: workstation users need expandability, and the current Mac Pro's four drive bays and space for multiple PCIe cards is hard to beat. A totally redesigned chassis is a distinct possibility, but it won't be tiny.

There are other rumors floating about, including speculation about a service called iRadio and possible upgrades to iLife. These are sure to get some tech press coverage in the next few days. Jim Kelly diagnosed with cancer, given good recovery prognosis - SportingNews.com

Jim Kelly, who played a Hall of Fame career at quarterback for the Buffalo Bills, has been diagnosed with cancer in his upper jaw bone, he announced in a statement on Monday.

In the statement issued by the Bills, Kelly announced he has been diagnosed with Squamous-cell carcinoma of the upper jaw bone. He will undergo surgery on June 7. "Doctors have told me that the prognosis for my recovery is very good," Kelly said in the statement.

Jim Kelly, a Hall of Fame QB who played his NFL career with the Buffalo Bills, has been diagnosed with cancer. His prognosis for recovery is "very good." (AP photo)

He went on to add the following:

"With the excellent medical care that I will be receiving and the loving care of my wife Jill and my daughters Erin and Camryn and the support of my entire family and friends, I am extremely confident in my road to recovery," Kelly said in his statement. "I plan to tackle this challenge head on, as we Kelly's always do, with toughness, perseverance and faith.

"I want to thank everyone who has offered their prayers and would appreciate any prayers said for me and my family moving forward. May God continue to bless you and our family.'

Kelly was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2002 and is the Buffalo Bills' all-time leading passer with 35,467 yards. He also led the Bills to four consecutive Super Bowls from 1990-93.
